「じょぉ」の正体は？

The Mystery of “Jo-o”

ベビーサイナーHちゃんのエピソード。
This is a story about a baby signer named H-chan.

ママと絵本を読んでいたある日、絵本を見ながら「じょぉ」と、言葉を発しました。
One day, she and her mom were spending time reading a book together.
As they enjoyed the book, H-chan casually said something that sounded like “Jo-o.”

何を言いたかったのかがはっきり分からなくて、
ひとまず本のページを進めるママ。
However, because it wasn’t clear to her mom, she simply continued turning the page.

終わりのページまで行くと、さっきの「じょぉ」
が気になり、もう一度さっきのページを開いてみました。
When her mom reached the last page, she remembered the word H-chan had said and decided to go back to that page.

すると、ベビーサイナーちゃん、また
「じょぉ」！と言います。でも今回は言葉だけではありません。腕を伸ばしゆらゆらし始めたのです。
Then, H-chan said the same word again — “Jo-o” — but this time, she also used a baby sign! She stretched out her arm and started swinging it.

ベビーサインで伝えようとしました。
She was trying to show her mom what she meant with both her words and her sign!

そのサインは、【ぞう】。
What she was trying to say was “elephant”!

「あぁ！ぞうさんね！そうだね！ぞうさんがいたね！」と、ママは応えました。
“Oh! Elephant! Now I see! Yes, elephant! I see!” her mom exclaimed.

ママに分かったもらえた瞬間。
ベビーサイナーちゃんは嬉しかったに
違いありません！
That moment must have meant so much to H-chan, because her mom completely understood her!

言葉では伝わらなかった言いたかった事、
でもサインが分かるからちゃんとママに
伝わりました！嬉しいね！
気持ちを発信して良かったね！
Without signs, it was difficult for her to express herself. But with signs, it became possible!
That’s such a big difference. Baby signs really help babies express themselves!
