“Do You Understand My Sign?” — Babies Who Sort People Out

ベビーサイナーNちゃんのママ、お仕事中

あるママと赤ちゃんと会う機会があったそうです。その親子の様子を見て、Nちゃんママ

何かに気づきました。

赤ちゃんがサインをしています。

「【お茶】と、言ってるんだよね！お茶が飲みたいんだね！」と、サインとともに

声をかけたNちゃんママ、

その瞬間、赤ちゃんの目がキラーン！！

この人サインが分かるの⁈ と言わんばかりに

目がキラキラ輝いたそう！！

たまたまベビーサイン育児をしている

親御さんと会い、ベビーサインの話で

盛り上がり、サインを交えて赤ちゃんとも

コミュニケーションがとれた、そんな

楽しいひと時を過ごしたNちゃんママ。

　N-chan’s mother, who had experienced baby-sign life with N-chan, happened to meet another mother and her baby while she was at work. As she chatted with the mother, she noticed something about the baby.

The baby was making a sign.

“Tea! I know what you mean — you want some tea!” she said to the baby, signing as she spoke.

　In that instant, the baby’s eyes lit up with joy and surprise. It was as if she had never met anyone outside her family who understood her signs. Her sparkling eyes seemed to say,

“You get it!”

From there, the mothers enjoyed talking about baby sign language, and N-chan’s mother also had a wonderful time communicating with the baby through signs.

「先生！赤ちゃんがサインが通じると分かった

瞬間って一瞬驚いた顔をするんですね！！

サインで話しかけると凄く嬉しそうに

笑ってくれました！！」

とNちゃんママが楽しそうに教えてくれました。

　“Teacher! The moment a baby realizes someone understands signs, they first look so surprised! Then, right away, their face turns into the happiest, sparkling smile. It’s just the cutest thing!!”

That’s how N-chan’s mother told me the story — and it’s absolutely true.

そうなんです！！

ベビーサインを学んだ赤ちゃん達は

サインが通じる人、通じない人、

出会う人々をこの2つのグループに

仕分け始めます。

世の中にはサインが通じない人も

多いんだと理解し始めた時に思いがけなく

出会う「通じる人」には

驚きと嬉しさを感じるのです。

とても可愛い瞬間ですね！

　That’s right! As babies grow, they begin to realize that some people understand their signs and others do not. They gradually sort people into two groups — signpeople and

non-sign people. And before long,

they choose to use signs only

with those who understand.

　So when they unexpectedly meet someone who does understand, the surprise and joy on their face is just priceless.
